When I was married, our family observed a very popular “holiday:” Minnesota Deer Hunting Season.

It’s roughly the three weeks between Halloween and Thanksgiving. To my husband, it was as important and revered as Xmas. We’d discuss, plan, budget and prepare for it just like Dec 25th, but we’d buy ammunition instead of gifts. Conveniently, I could get the Xmas shopping done at Fleet Farm’s Toyland while Brad shopped for bullets. And I’d always pick up some blaze orange lingerie for myself.

After I had my son, I joined Weight Watchers to lose the pregnancy weight. At that time, WW used a points system to track food. We were given a certain number of points to eat during the day. They gave us a little formula to use when consulting nutrition charts to determine how many points were in a serving. Sometimes, a food would come up with zero points. So in theory, those were ‘free’ foods to eat. Usually, those were vegetables in a small quantity.
